About Come Walk With Me
In 1986, Pinky VanDyk was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her daughters would go to treatments with her bringing blankets & visiting other patients who didn't have anyone there with them. In 2007, Pinky's daughter Laura Steinthal was also diagnosed with breast cancer. To support Laura during treatment, the family signed up for a breast cancer walk in Sumner put on by the Downtown Association. There were only about 50 participants and they knew they needed to do something about it. Ida VanDyk McCleary (also Pinky's daughter) went to an Association meeting and walked out the new Chairman of the event.
The VanDyk's grew from 50 participants to 150 at their first walk and were able to deliver a check for $8,000 to MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital breast health programs. Over the years, the event continued to grow reaching 800 walkers and became the largest breast cancer walk in Pierce County. Eventually, they teamed up with MultiCare and have seen over 1000 participants and $100k+ raised in recent years. Laura and Pinky lost their battles to cancer, but the VanDyk family stays positive and committed to the mission of CWWM. They do it to honor them and to give back to a community they love.
We mentioned this event is close to our hearts, and it is! Pinky was our owner Jenn’s husbands Beppe (grandma) and Laura was his Aunt. From arriving in the early morning to doing whatever Aunt Ida needed them to do, Jenn & Charlie have supported CWWM for years. They know going virtual has impacted fundraising and wanted to help, thus our t-shirt fundraiser was born. Let’s show up for CWWM and our community!
Also, something we love about CWWM is their focus is on breast health care programs. When someone is diagnosed, fighting their battle or in remission, they need support in that moment and through that journey. Here are a few programs CWWM funds:
- Establishing a free/reduced fee mammography program through Her Piece of Mind.
- Providing resource kits for newly diagnosed patients.
- Complimentary wigs for patients in treatment.
- Lymphedema classes & support groups.
- Exercise & nutrition classes specifically for breast cancer patients.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY AND THIS CAUSE!
